How To Set Up Xbox 360 Live

So you have gone out and bought the Xbox 360!? It was a fabulous decision and you will enjoy hours upon hours of playing time with your new device, but before you get started into the wide world of online gaming you are going to need to know how to join together the 360 to the Live network.

Before you do whatever you are going to need to decide how you plan on connecting the bad boy. The 360 supports both wired and wireless connections. In order to use a wireless connection you will need the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter. Personally I find the wireless connection to be a bit too temperamental for my liking so I go with a wired connection via a router, but not every person has the same wireless experience.

How To Set Up Netgear Wireless Router

To set up the connection via a router unplug the router and the modem and turn off the 360. join together an Ethernet cable to one of the out ports of the preexisting router then join together the cord to the back of your 360. Plug everything back in and turn and give the modem and router about 3 minutes to reboot.

Once you have given everything a few minutes to reboot you can turn the 360 back on. If you have already set up a gamer profile you will see the Xbox Live screen. If you have not set up an catalogue you will be prompted to do so. All you need to do is consequent the on screen instructions. It is a pretty cut and dry process and should not take more than 10 minutes of your time.

If you want to go wireless or you must go wireless you will need to get the Xbox360 wireless network adapter. The adapters are available at most market that sell 360 games or you can order it online. Once you have the adapter unplug any Ethernet cable you might have plugged into the 360 then clip the Network adapter to the back of the 360. It is literally easy to see where it belongs, but just in case, the adapter will sit right alongside the Usb port which is right above the Ethernet port. Once you have clipped it in plug the Usb cable that is attached to the adapter into the port on the Xbox 360. Flip up the antenna that is laying flat against the adapter and you are set, well roughly set.

Turn on the 360 and head into the principles tray. You will see Network options, go ahead into that screen and consequent it through to the "Edit Settings" subcategory. The Network name should appear on a list of available networks. adopt your network and enter the password, if there is a password. Exit out and you should be ready to play.

It is all a very straightforward process and Microsoft has gone ahead and made it super easy to setup the network in no time at all. From start to conclude the entire setup should only take about 15 minutes, tops!

Wireless Connectivity - How to Set Up A Netgear Router

There are times when the learning curve in this technologically appealing information age can seem like a mountain range. Once you conquer one peak or obstacle and you think you are the smartest fellow on the planet, an additional one task presents itself and you are off to the treatment cabinet for an additional one blood pressure tablet. I opinion it would be a good idea to document the up-to-date caress I had when trying to way the internet on a new laptop in a friend's home using a modem and a wireless router. The think is that I would have liked it if someone had previously documented the same caress for me. It sure would have saved me some time.

The Netgear Rangemax Wireless N Gigabit Router Wnr3500 is a fine bit of gear. I have previously used this hardware to associate an whole household to the internet. Wireless routers are significant for any home network that merge wireless and wired network connections. It was used previously with the operating principles Windows Xp with an iPstar Satellite terminal iCon Series Modem. The setup was easy because all I had to do was install the software and supervene the instructions. It was a piece of cake.

How To Set Up A Wireless Router

how to set up a wireless router

I was working with a newly acquired Acer laptop emachines E727. I was trying to use the router to way the same wireless internet relationship using Windows 7 Home Edition as the operating system. I tried to install software using Cd version 2.0 I received with the router but the error message I received stated that I had a compatibility problem with the version of Windows I was running. I spent quite a bit of significant searching Google for a software upgrade to solve the compatibility problem. I had no luck and so as a last resort I contacted the 'Netgear Support' number.

It is a good idea to confirm that you well have an internet relationship so initially I associated an Ethernet cable from the modem to the Rj45 Ethernet port on the laptop. Once the broadband internet way was confirmed I associated the laptop to the modem straight through the router. The modem is associated to the router via an Ethernet cable from the modem to the yellow way point marked 'Internet' on the router. I have an additional one cable running from ethernet production relationship 1 on the router to the Rj45 Ethernet port on the laptop.

On the bottom right of the laptop there is the internet relationship icon next to the speakers icon. When I moved the mouse over the icon it showed an old internet relationship name. It was therefore significant to log in to the router to convert the settings. This was achieved by typing 192.168.1.1 in the browser window.

The default values for the Netgear Wnr3500 are;

Username: admin

Password: password

Under 'Setup', go to 'Wireless Settings'. Go to 'Wireless Network'.

Go to the 'Name (Ssid)' field and delete the former entry value. Enter a new name in the field for 'Name (Ssid)' using a name that you will recognize. This value could be something as easy as your surname. It can be a value of your choice and must be up to 32 alphanumeric characters. It is foremost to remember that this 'Name(Ssid)' must be assigned to all wireless devices on your network and that this value is case sensitive.

Go to the 'Region' field and settle on your region from the drop-down list.

Go to the 'Channel' field which determines which operating frequency will be used. I entered channel 11.

Go to the 'Mode' field and settle on the desired wireless mode. The default is "Up to 145Mbps", which is the neighbor kindly mode.

Under 'Security Options' I use 'Wpa-Psk [Tkip]'. This is an acronym for Wi-Fi Protected way with Pre-Shared Key. Use Wpa-Psk standard encryption with Tkip encryption type. This is purely a bit of useless information for the useless information department.

At the bottom of the page under 'Security Options (Wpa-Psk + Wpa2-Psk) Passphrase', enter a word or group of printable characters in the passphrase box. The Passphrase must be 8 to 63 characters in length. Use something that you can well remember. If you cannot think of anything, use your mobile phone number.

Click 'Apply' to have your changes take supervene and the router will update. When the router has updated, return to the internet icon at the bottom right of the page and left click. You should have the new 'Name (Ssid)' as the internet connection. If all has gone to plan, you can remove the cable and browse the internet, wireless style. It is the only way to go!

How to Choose the Best Wireless Router For Your Need

Wireless router is the main wireless devices needed, besides the modem, to build a wireless network environment in home or in the SOHO. Generally when you sign-up for a broadband internet connection from the ISP, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected direct to one computer in home either using USB port or NIC adapter. So if you want to build a wireless network, you need to buy a router or access point. How do you know which one is the best wireless router you need?

The term the best wireless router is relative; there are some factors you need to consider in deciding which router is the best for your need. If you have limited budget, you really need to consider the basic requirements which are the best for your need. For example, if you just want to share the broadband internet connection with couple of computers in the household, and other share documents and printer within the household, then you don't need to buy a high features router such as one which is designed specifically for gamers in mind.

Netgear Wireless N Router

There are many types of Wireless Routers at the marketplace you can purchase, but which one is the best? In selecting the wireless router; some people make the mistake of trying to find the best wireless router. Of course, that's a moving target as router get better and better with each new model introduction, but what you really need is The perfect router that is best for your need. So your target is not the best wireless router but the best for your need.

Best Wireless router for Internet sharing

Based on the "The perfect router that is best for your need" If you just want to build a wireless environment in home to share the internet connection, or just for the portability reason so you can browse the internet with your laptop everywhere within the house wirelessly, you just need an all-in-one device which combines the function of modem, router, and the wireless access point.

If you subscribe for ADSL internet from the ISP which includes the monthly charges for the modem, you can purchase all-in-one device which includes the ADSL modem with the price under 0 such as D-Link DSL-2640B, or you can consider Netgear DG834Gv5 - a DSL Wireless Modem with Wireless -G Router and built-in DSL Modem. Both are routers with built-in ADSL modem, including 4-port Switch LAN, wireless access point, and with router/firewall feature for security protection against the internet threats.

Both routers would be suitable for your home wireless environment to share the internet, share the files and printer with several computers in the household. All the requirements you need for building a wireless environment in home with this type of modem-router, a single device for all. This type of all-in-one device would be the perfect wireless router for your need. For Cable Internet, you can consider SBG-900 Cable modem router by Motorola.

Wireless Router for Gaming and HD Streaming

Still hold the principle of the perfect wireless router for your need, wireless router for gaming and HD media streaming demands high performance, fast, and reliable networks. Both Gaming and streaming HD video applications demand high-speed networks that capable of delivering high bandwidth-sensitive applications. They should be capable to intelligently manage and automatically prioritize network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications. You need a wireless router which has QoS (Quality of Service) technology feature.

The fastest wireless network today is based on draft 2.0 802.11n standards. It is not finalized yet, but mostly the manufacturers have shipped their new lines of products using this draft version of 802.11n technology. This draft 802.11n (wireless -N) technology can deliver the speed of up to 300 Mbps (ideal condition, actual speed may vary) with enhanced technology specific to the manufacturers. They should also feature enhanced wireless technology for optimal range and connectivity such as MIMO technology. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas to coherently resolve more information than possible using a single antenna.

The best wireless router for gaming and streaming HD media should be clear from the source of interference. Common source of radio interference is wireless devices which operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band such as cordless phone, baby monitor, microwave oven, home security and monitoring appliances, garage controller, and so on. Wireless 802.11b/g and draft 802.11n standards operate in 2.4 GHz radio band too. For a clear radio band, the wireless router should include the dual-band feature which can operate both in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (802.11a) radio bands either selectable or simultaneous. With dual-band, you can stream HD media as well as for gaming in a clear 5 GHz frequency band, less radio interference as in 2.4 GHz band. This will assure a jitter-free and lag-free wireless environment.

Example of the perfect wireless router for gaming and HD streaming is D-Link DGL-4500. DGL-4500 is specifically designed for gamers in mind. It is powered by award winning GameFuel technology which allows you to customize your network settings to prioritize game traffic so others will not hog all the bandwidth while downloading HD media.

Best Home VPN Router - Making Information Secure Yet Accessible

When you are working from home, congratulations! You are one of the few people who has succeeded in breaking the pattern of "working for the man". You have become your own boss. You feel empowered as you are determining the direction in which you want your business to go.

What does a VPN router, or a virtual private network router, have to do with working from home? Well, a lot, possibly. We'll explore two reasons why a home office needs a VPN router, which is making your business and home information more secure, and second, making your information accessible. But first, let us define a VPN router!

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

What is a VPN router?

If you have more than one computer in your home office or home then you likely have a home network set up. And the first thing that attaches to your cable modem or DSL modem is a wired or wireless router. The router's main purpose is to allow all the computers attached to your home office network to access the internet independently, so the internet connection can be shared. The second most important function of the router is that it actually creates the home network, that is, it makes home network computers accessible from each others. A more advanced concept would be to attach a home network storage to the router, and have shared disk space available to everyone.

So why would you need a small office VPN router or a VPN wireless router? A VPN, Virtual Private Network, router is a router that allows not only computers on the home network to share the internet connection, but also allows authenticated users on the internet (think yourself at the Starbucks with a laptop or iPhone) access your home network through a secure connection over the shared, public internet. It is like building a secret tunnel directly from your home network to your browser on your laptop outside home. All you need is internet access, your VPN password and a small piece of VPN software for your laptop. Then, you can access your home network from anywhere securely and no one else will know about that.

VPN through router makes your private information more accessible

By allowing authenticated, strong password protected incoming connections to your home VPN router and your home network, you suddenly have access to your home network from anywhere you are. Document files, your videos, music mp3 files, even the programs that you normally run at home, are suddenly available to you seamlessly. Be it at the local Starbucks, at the client's office, at a friend's house, you will have a connection and access to your data any time, as long as you provide a secure password.

VPN router makes your information more secure

Sure, you say, but I use a laptop anyways for my business, and I can take it anywhere with me. True. But, consider the downside. All your software, all your data, is there with you, in public places, in the car. These are all the places where your laptop and your valuable information can easily be stolen if you leave them unattended even just for a minute. So you either need to exercise an extreme level of caution when roaming outside your home, or... get a secure VPN router and leave ALL the important information securely stored in house, and access it securely from wherever you are.

New D Link Dir-827 and Dir-857: The First Wireless Routers With a USB 3.0 Port

Being able to share an external storage attached to the wireless router is an advantage to support your multimedia wireless environment. This is particularly advantageous if your wireless router supports a built-in media server. Wireless routers with a built-in media server allow you to stream multimedia files stored in the attached storage to the Blu-Ray player, XBOX console, and HDTV seamlessly.

Standard home wireless routers do not include a USB port, but mostly home wireless routers which fall into high performance router category are embedded with one or two ports. USB 2.0 port can deliver data rate transfer up to 480Mbps. If you have 5 or ten users or even more on your network either via wired or wireless connections access the files stored in the attached storage intensively time to time, you will experience a slow performance in accessing or transferring the files to and from the storage. This is due to the maximum data rate transfer the USB 2.0 device can deliver is up to 480Mbps. What if the router is embedded by Superspeed (aka USB-3.0) port?

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

Intel specifies the speed of Superspeed port as fast up to 10 times as the speed of traditional USB 2.0 port with the data rate transfer up to 5Gbps. In CES 2011 D Link showcased two wireless routers which are embedded by Superspeed port: the Dir-827 and the Dir-857 wireless dual band routers with data rate transfer up to 2Gbps. It's not as fast the maximum speed transfer as Superspeed port specified by Intel (5Gbps), but it is still as fast 4 times as those traditional routers with USB 2.0 port.

Both Dir-827 and Dir-857 are true simultaneous dual band routers with USB 3.0 port but with different speed. The Dir-827 is engineered by wireless N600 technology with the speed up to 300Mbps similar to the Wndr3800 N600 router, while the Dir-857 is engineered by the wireless N750 technology with the speeds up to 450Mbps similar to the Linksys E4200 N750 router.

How do you compare Dir-827 with Linksys E4200 router? The main differences between Dir-827 and E4200 wireless routers are the speed, the USB port and the guest network. Firstly, the total bandwidth Dir-827 can deliver is up to 600Mbps (300Mbps each band) but Linksys E4200 is up to 750Mbps. Secondly, the Dir-827 includes one Superspeed port but Linksys E4200 includes traditional USB 2.0 port. Not just that, Superspeed port in Dir-827 is powered by Shareport technology to let you easily host an external storage or printer which can be accessed by users on the network. And the last but not the least, Linksys E4200 supports guest network to provide your guests internet access without compromising your private network, but D Link Dir-827 doesn't support guest network.

Except the Superspeed port compliant, the D Link Dir-827 is similar to Netgear WNDR3800 premium edition which the USB port can be used to share the storage or the printer. Is the Superspeed port in both Dir-827 and Dir-857 important for your need? You will judge, but I prefer the wireless router which includes two USB ports for hosting both storage and printer concurrently to support my "work and play" environment.

Wireless Networking, Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

Wireless Networking, Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

These days it isn't uncommon for a home to have multiple personal computers, and as such, it just makes sense for them to be able to share files, as well as to share one Internet connection. Wired networking is an option, but it is one that may require the installation and management of a great deal of wiring in order to get even a modestly sized home set up. With wireless networking equipment becoming extremely affordable and easy to install, it may be worth considering by those looking to build a home network, as well as by those looking to expand on an existing wired network.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

The first installment in this two-part series of Tech Tips will provide an introduction to the basic capabilities and hardware involved in wireless networking. Once that foundation has been established, we'll take a look at a few setup and security related considerations that should be addressed once the physical installation is complete.

Capabilities

The basic standard that covers wireless networking is the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11, which is close kin to the wired Ethernet standard, 802.3. Many people will recognize 802.11 more readily when accompanied by one of three suffixes (a, b, or g), used to specify the exact protocol of wireless networking.

The 802.11a protocol first hit the scene in 2001, and despite a small surge in recent popularity, it is definitely the least common of the three at this time. The signals are transmitted on a 5 GHz radio frequency, while "b" and "g" travel on 2.4 GHz. The higher frequency means that the signal can travel less distance in free space and has a harder time penetrating walls, thus making the practical application of an 802.11a network a bit limited. The maximum transfer rate, however, is roughly 54 Mbps, so it makes up for its limited range with respectable speed.

As mentioned, 802.11b and 802.11g networks operate on a 2.4 GHz radio band, which gives a much greater range as compared to 802.11a. One downside to being on the 2.4 GHz band is that many devices share it, and interference is bound to be an issue. Cordless phones and Bluetooth devices are two of many items that operate at this frequency. The range of these two protocols is about 300 feet in free air, and the difference between the two comes down to speed. 802.11b came first, released back in 1999, and offers speeds up to 11 Mbps. 802.11g first appeared in 2002 and it is a backwards compatible improvement over 802.11b and offers speeds up to 54 Mbps.

On top of these protocols, some manufacturers have improved upon the 802.11g standard and can provide speeds of up to 108 Mbps. This doesn't involve a separate protocol, but just a bit of tweaking in areas like better data compression, more efficient data packet bursting, and by using two radio channels simultaneously. Typically, stock 802.11g equipment is not capable of these speeds, and those interested need to shop for matched components that specify 108 Mbps support. I say "matched components" as this is not a standard protocol and the various manufacturers may take different approaches to achieving these speeds. In order to ensure the best results when trying to achieve these elevated speeds, components from the same manufacturer should be used together. For instance, only Netgear brand network adaptors rated for 108 Mbps data transfer should be used with something like the Netgear WG624 wireless router (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WGT624NAR).

Considering your typical broadband Internet connection is going to offer data transfer rates of 10 Mbps or less, it can be seen that even 802.11b would be more than adequate if you just want to surf the web. Sharing files on your LAN (Local Area Network) is where the faster protocols will really make a difference, and comparing the prices of 802.11b and 802.11g components may show that there is little to no difference in selecting a "g" capable device over a comparable "b" capable device.

Hardware

Access Point - Wireless Access Point (WAP) is the central device that manages the transmission of wireless signals on a network. A base access point may be capable of handling up to 10 connections, and more robust APs may be able to manage up to 255 connections simultaneously. The D-Link DWL-1000AP+ (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=37) is an example of a wireless access point capable of 802.11b transmissions.

Router - In somewhat technical terms, a router is a network device that forwards data packets. It is generally the connection between at least two networks, such as two LANs, or a LAN and ISP's (Internet Service Provider's) network. For our purposes, and for the sake of simplicity, a wireless router is basically an access point with the added feature of having a port for sharing a broadband Internet connection. The D-Link AirPlus G (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DI524-R&cat=NET) is an 802.11g capable router that provides access for numerous wireless connections and four hard-wired connections to one WAN (Wide Area Network Internet) connection. A typical router for home use will generally cost less than an access point, and via settings within the firmware, can be used as just an access point anyway. Wired or wireless, all the computers using the router can share files over the network, as well as sharing a broadband internet connection. Communication between wireless computers (or a wireless computer and a wired computer) will max out at 54 Mbps, while communication between wired computers will take full advantage of the 100 Mbps provided via the 802.3 protocol.

Network Adaptor - A network adaptor is required for every computer that you would like to be connected to the wireless network. Many laptops, such as this Sony Centrino 1.5 GHz (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PCGZ1RA-R&cat=NBB) now include a wireless adaptor built in, so no extra hardware is needed. For those with systems that don't have wireless capabilities built in, adding them is fairly simple, and can be done using a variety of connections. Desktop computers can go wireless by adding a PCI slot network adaptor such as the 802.11g capable D-Link DWL-G510 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=308). Notebook users can easily add wireless connectivity by using a PCMCIA adaptor, such as this 802.11g capable device (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PBW006-N&cat=NET). And for truly convenient plug-n-play connectivity to wireless networks, USB adaptors such as this 802.11g capable dongle (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=80211GWUD&cat=NET) are available.

Antenna/Extender - These items are not essential, but given the specifics of a wireless environment, they may be helpful. Devices such as the Hawking Hi-Gain Antenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HAI6SIP-N&cat=NET) or the Super Cantenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SCB10&cat=NET) serve the purpose of increasing the wireless signal strength, and therefore extend the range of a given wireless network. Not only can a large area of open space be covered, but the signal quality may be improved in structures with walls and floors that obstruct the signal transmission.

Final Words

In this Tech Tip, we took a look at the basics of wireless networking as it relates to capabilities and hardware. In the second part of this two-part series, we will look at some of the basic setup and security considerations that should be addressed. The physical installation of a wireless network may be exponentially easier than a wired network, but the more difficult part is setting up the software and security to make sure everything stays up and running without incident.

iPad is powered with wireless n technology and is compliant with 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless standards. It means that iPad is powered by dual-band technology. Wireless 802.11n technology is the latest and the fastest wireless technology available in the market today. Dual-band technology supports both 2.4 GHz (802.11 b/g/n) and 5 GHz (802.11a) frequency bands. It also equipped with Bluetooth 2.1 plus EDR technology, but nothing to do with your router. With the 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless technology the iPad supports, your router must be able to support the 802.11 a/b/g/n technology. This means your router should support the same technology for optimum data throughput: wireless n dual-band technology.

With wireless n dual-band technology, the router provides high-speed and clean wireless when using the 5 GHz frequency band. iPad works well in streaming the video preview and downloading media when your Wi-Fi environment delivers high-performance network: high-speed, jitter-free video and lag-free gaming. To deliver high-performance network, your router should support the Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization engine technology. With QoS, the router can analyze and separate the traffic into multiple data streams and categorize them by sensitivity to delay. Applications like video streaming, VoIP and gaming are given priority over web browsing.

The best wireless router for iPad should support the wireless n dual-band technology with Quality of Services technology. The following are couple of the best wireless routers for iPad.

Discovering Wireless Router Reviews

With so many computer-related products it's hard to know what to buy. It's more essential than ever to research the products you are interested in. Making sure you're getting the absolute best value and price. Purchasing a wireless router is a big decision and choosing the wrong router will ruin your wireless network from the beginning. In this type of situation, reading first-hand wireless router reviews would be helpful to distinguish among not just the various manufacturers of but also the various models of wireless routers as well.

Deciding on the Brand

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

When examining wireless router reviews the most essential point to take note of is the manufacturer that's getting discussed. Many brands of routers exist and each operates slightly differently. I am a big fan of "Linksys" wireless routers, but other name brands that offer routers include D-Link, NetGear and Belkin. Though each one has their own characteristics, the basics of the wireless router should be present, including blinking or constant lights that indicated the routers' "power" status and whether it is receiving an internet connection from your internet modem.

Another important issue when choosing the type of router brand is whether it's compatible with your other hardware. To reduce the chance of network errors, a good rule of thumb is to use the same brands of computer hardware for your network setup so that no inconsistencies exist. Most Wi-Fi routers, however, especially Linksys wireless routers, are made to be compatible and work with multiple products and internet platforms. The inter-operability between devices, though, is an issue to pay attention to when reading first-hand router reviews.

Choosing a Design

You'll see that there are many types of models that you'll read about when choosing the router model for your computer network. It's important that the router either support 802.11 "b/g" or "n" technology, and in many cases support all three. Knowing the difference between "b/g" and "n" models is pretty simple: the latest "n" routers should offer slightly faster speeds and better performances than "b/g" models, but should also be backwards-compatible with "b/g" wireless devices. However, reading wireless router reviews ought to help you figure out which of these models you need to purchase for your computing requirements.

Be sure to pay attention to the operating and realized speeds when reading first-hand router reviews of Linksys routers or any other router devices. Only first-hand users can give you an idea of how slow or fast their own internet connection is because of their Wi-Fi router. As such, you will be able to find out from these first-hand evaluations whether you're about to invest in a quality item or 1 that requirements function. In addition, another important factor to consider, some Wi-Fi router brands offer speed-booster-type devices.

How to Set Up a Wireless Router

Many people end up frustrated and confused when trying to set up a wireless router themselves. They usually attempt to follow the setup CD or instructions that came with the router and end up giving up or paying someone else to do it for them.

This article will outline the three basic concepts you need to understand to set up a wireless router yourself. I'm going to show you how to do it without using the setup CD that comes with your router and without any of the fancy gadgets or push buttons designed to make setting up a wireless router easy. While these methods may seem easy on the surface they don't always work. They also keep you isolated from any understanding of what is actually going on. If a simple mistake is made you may get stuck and be forced to turn to someone else for help.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

Once you understand how to set up a wireless router you'll also understand how to set up just about any wireless device on the market including printers, game consoles, iPads etc.

The three basic concepts you need to understand about wireless routers and wireless networking security are:

1. Your SSID - Service Set Identifier. This is a big sounding word that simply means the name of your wireless network. It's best to change this from the default and give it a name that means something to you but means little to someone else. Something like ILHMAP for "I Love Home Made Apple Pie" is good.

2. Your Encryption Type - You need to understand the hierarchy of wireless encryption. It all started with WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy. This came standard with most B and G routers. As computer processors speeds increased WEP became easier and easier to crack so a new standard came out call WPA. WPA uses TKIP as it's encryption. Soon after WPA came out WPA2 was introduced. WPA2 uses an even stronger form of encryption called AES. Some older operating systems and game consoles will only work with WEP. When you can you want to use WPA or WPA2. Many times you can choose WPA/WPA2 which allows you to use both types of encryption with the same password. This is a very popular choice when setting up security on a wireless router.

3. Your Pass phrase - This is also known as the password or "encryption key". It's often confused with the router password. The router password is simply the password you use to log into the router. The encryption key is what allows a computer, printer or other network device to connect or "associate" with the wireless router. WEP passwords are generated by typing in a word or phrase. The result is usually scrambled into something like "17B295FcA8". You then have to type these hexidecimal characters into each of your devices. Not very user-friendly. WPA and WPA2 do not generate difficult to remember hex numbers like WEP. You can simply type in 8-63 characters such as "My dog barks 2 loud". In this example spaces count as characters and the "M" in "My" MUST be capitalized.

Now that you understand the basic concepts involved with wireless networking let's put them to use.

All that's really left to do now is access the routers web interface and enter the parameters mentioned above.

In order to access the routers web interface you need to know three things.

1. The routers IP address.
2. The routers user name and password.
3. If you computer is on the same network as the routers IP address.

IP Address

The routers IP address is usually something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1 or even 10.0.0.1. The documentation that came with the router should provide this. If you don't have the documentation simply do a search engine search for "router make and model default IP."

Username And Password

The routers username and password is usually along the lines of "admin" and "password". If these don't work simply do a search engine search on "router make and model default password". If it's a second-hand router you may need to hard reset it to get it back to it's default. Hard resetting usually involves poking a paper clip into a tiny hole in the back of the router and holding it for 15 to 30 seconds and releasing. Once you release the router will reboot and return to it's factory default settings and you'll be able to use it's default username and password to log on.

Same Network?

If you computer is on the same network as the routers IP address you'll be able to connect. If not you won't be able to connect. Network devices need to be on the same network to communicate with each other unless they're using a special configured router to join their separate networks. Once you know your routers default IP address simply go your computers command prompt and type in IPCONFIG. This will return your computers IP address.

If the first three "octets" of your routers IP and your computers IP line up your on the same network. If they don't you won't be able to connect.

Let's look at some examples of this:

If your routers default IP address is: 192.168.1.1 and your computer IP address is 192.168.0.4 you won't be able to connect.

A better illustration of this is as follows:

Same network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.1.30

Different network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.0.30

So if your PC is not on the same network as the router what do you do?

Simply connect one end of an ethernet cable to one of the four ports in the back of you router and the other to the network port in your PC and reboot.

When the computer reboots it will automatically pick up an IP from your routers built-in DHCP server that will allow you to connect to the router.

Now that all the stars are all properly aligned it's time to connect to the router.

To do this simply:

1. Enter your routers IP address into your favorite browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and hit "enter".

2. Type in the username and password to access the router.

3. Find the "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" section in your router and enter the SSID, Encryption and Pass phrase parameters as discussed above.

That's it!

Once you're done you simply need to enter the pass phrase you created into the wireless utilities in each of your network devices. This is a simple matter of clicking or tapping on your SSID, entering you pass phrase and clicking on "connect!"

Comparison of File Extensions TAR and SIS

The word 'tar' is probably derived as a result of its use in the tapes. The file extension TAR stands for files that came into existence for their usage in backup formats. TAR files were used initially in the devices such as backup tapes and other such back up devices.

However, TAR extension is used differently now. It is used more as a directory extension, to combine files and make them bigger and also perhaps, store them as an archive, or may be as a means to distribute. The extension is more popular with directory and storing dates.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

TAR files work differently on different operating systems. If you choose to work with TAR on Windows, you need to take the help of tools to download them. However, it works differently on Linux. Linux features have the compatibility to work with TAR files, and therefore it works best with TAR, without the need of adding additional tools. You should remember that such files have to be unzipped, before you could use them.

Do you know what file extension SIS stands for? 'Sis' stands for 'Software Installation Script'. One of the biggest misunderstandings people have about these files is their assumption of them as application ones. In reality they only work as storage files.

One similarity SIS files have with TAR is the features of archiving, otherwise, SIS files work differently. The format stores Symbian operating system, and the extension files also have been developed by Symbian. One of the significant features of SIS format is its use in mobiles. Mobile phones use this extension to download Symbian operating systems.

MATCH Function in Microsoft Excel

Excel offers a function for finding specific data in column or row called MATCH. This function will allow you to find the location within an array, versus the LOOKUP functions that provide information related to the data you are seeking but in another column or row (you can use the LOOKUP function to return values in the same column or row, but the MATCH function shortens it a bit).

The format of the MATCH function is:

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

=MATCH (lookup_value,lookup_array,match_type).

The lookup_value is the item you want to find within the lookup_array, like finding "apple" in a range of fruits or "green" in a list of colors. The match_type can be 1, 0 or 1. If the match_type is left blank, then it is assumed to equal 1. By using 1, MATCH will return the exact value or the value that is the largest value less than the specific item for which you are searching. In this case, the array must be in ascending order. Conversely, using -1 will provide he value that is immediately larger than the item for which you are searching, if no exact value exists. If you use -1, the array must be in descending order. If the match_type is 0, only an exact match is accepted, and if no exact match is available, #N/A! is returned. With match_type set to 0, the array can be in any order.

The order is important, because the 1 or -1 is dependent on how the data is presented. If, for example, you have a range of data in a non-sequential order, you will get the wrong answer. Let's assume that the array contains the following data:

1, 4, 7, 2, 21, 14, 5, 32, 6.

If you enter the formula =MATCH(6,1, 4, 7, 2, 21, 14, 5, 32, 6), you will get the answer 2. Clearly there is a number 6 at the end of the array, but because it is not an exact search and the data is not in order, the MATCH formula produces an answer you do not want. If you modify the formula to read =MATCH(6,1, 4, 7, 2, 21, 14, 5, 32, 6,0), the answer will be 9, which is the correct location. So remember that for a NON-exact search, the order is imperative.

Once I learned to better incorporate the lookup functions, the MATCH function lost its relevance for many applications. In addition, when counting and summing, the array multiplication formulas work much better, and I will be discussing that in later articles. The point is that MATCH is good for a very limited set of basic inquiries, but ultimately, it is likely easily replaced by LOOKUP or other means. For now, it is a decent way to familiarize with the methodology Excel uses.

Finally, another formula used to determine the exact match that the MATCH formula uses, is, not surprisingly, EXACT. The format for this formula is = EXACT(text1,text2). This formula is not case sensitive, and straightforward in construct. This is another formula that is not entirely useful in most instances, because the double equal sign (= =) accomplishes the same result. For example, =EXACT(A1,B1) is the same as the formula =A1= = B1. Thus, the latter is as easy to use as the actual EXACT formula. The only rationale for mentioning this formula is to remind you that there are a myriad of formulas Excel provides, but some that may never be used or are easily replaced by better, more flexible formulas. The more experience you have in financial modeling, the more easily you will understand which formulas are the appropriate to use under the specific circumstances of your model.

High Performance Netgear Dual-Band Routers: Which One Is Best For Your Need?

Netgear has introduced several new wireless n routers since the IEEE approved the draft version of 802.11n standard. Netgear also redesigns existing routers to comply with the ratified version of 802.11n standard. Currently there are five wireless n dual band routers (one with built-in DSL modem) which are designed to meet high-performance category routers for fastest downloads, smooth gaming and better streaming video. They are WNDR3300 dual band router; WNDR3400 N600 dual-band router; DGND3300 wireless n DSL router; WNDR3700 wireless gigabit router; and WNDR37AV wireless router for gaming and video. WNDR37AV is believed for future replacement for WNDR3700 router.

3700 and 37AV routers are almost similar except that 37AV supports Windows 7, Live parental control, and DLNA compliant. DGND3300 is designed with built-in ADSL modem - a single solution for wireless network environments at home, let us now take a look at the comparison between the three routers 3300, 3400 and 37AV ..

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

Wireless standards

All three wireless routers are designed with simultaneous wireless - n work with both dual-band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless router All are compatible with a / b / g / n devices. With dual-band,the system provides double bandwidth for faster speed.

LAN / WAN Interface

All the three wireless routers are embedded with 4xRJ-45 LAN port and 1x WAN Ethernet port but only 37AV router is embedded with Gigabit ports for both LAN and WAN interfaces. All ports are Ethernet with auto-sensing, means the port can detect the network cable either cross or straight-through type and can adjust the signal automatically to match the cable type accordingly. You don't need to worry in selecting the cable type; both cross and straight-through cable can work.

USB Port

Both 37AV and 3400 routers are embedded with the USB port which can be used as the storage server. Netgear with ReadyShare technology provides fast and easy shared access to an external USB storage device. 37AV features a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) Media Server allows you stream video and music from a USB drive to media players, DLNA TVs, and any other DLNA compliant devices without the need to turn on the PC.

WNDR3300 wireless router does not include the USB port. This is one of the con sides of this router compared to other WNDR37AV and WNDR3400 routers.

The disadvantage of the three routers regarding the USB port is that they do not support the USB Printer for sharing. If you require the routers that support USB printer for sharing, you can consider the new Belkin including Share, Play, and Max Play wireless routers. Or you can consider the TEW-673GRU wireless router by Trendnet. TEW-673GRU is an all-in-one solution for wireless router, storage, and print server.

Advanced Security

All the 3300, 3400, and 37AV routers support the latest wireless encryption Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2 - PSK) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection) for connecting to legacy wireless clients. For network protection, NAT & SPI firewall and VPN pass-through for secure tunneling are also included.

The 'free live parental control' and 'guest access' are the distinct security features for 3400 and 37AV compared to 3300. 3300 doesn't support the guest access and free live parental control. With guest access, you can create specific SSID for guest separate from your private network. With live parental control, you can block bad sites for your kids and you can manage remotely from anywhere.

System Requirement

All the routers support Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS, UNIX, or Linux. WNDR3400 and WNDR37AV also support Windows 7, but WNDR3300 does not. Other requirements are the same.

Netgear Green Technology

Except 3300, both WNDR3400 and 37AV support Netgear Green technology. With green technology, the routers are designed with eco-friendly to help conserve the energy including power/wireless on/off buttons, 80% recycled packaging, energy star compliant power adapter etc.

Both the prices of WNDR3300 and 3400 are under currently, but for 37AV currently the price is around 0. Now which one do you need for your home wireless environment? Unless you require high-performance environment for video streaming and gaming more enjoyable and you also require Gigabit for fastest wired connection, you can consider WNDR3400 which is around 70% cheaper than 37AV. Otherwise, consider 37AV wireless n dual-band router.

Electronic Schematics Diagram - The Four Commonly Asked Questions

I stumbled across a series of questions about electronic chart patterns.

Most of the questions:

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router wnr2000

a) We really need a schematic to repair any electronic device?

b) scheme will help us to repair faster?

c) If we can create a certain pattern?

d) How to read pattern?

Well, the answer is as follows:

a)-Theoretically yes, practically not necessary, it all depends on howwell you are in electronic repair knowledge. For a beginner it is a "must" for you to understand too schematic, as they gradually acquired a greater knowledge depends not automatically scheme. You definitely need a schedule when you arrive on a new development or technology. For example, when it comes to CRT monitors I rarely see scheme to solve because I already understood most of the circuits and the sections in a CRT monitor. New technologies such as LCD orTFT monitor makes me rely temporarily on the diagram. As my knowledge grows, the repair of the LCD monitor, I post and not so much dependent on the patterns. Can my situation is different from sell, because I'm just focused on one type of equipment. I have seen a series of workshops in my country that repair many types of devices such as TV, video, VCD, DVD, amplifier, hi-fi, fax, laser printers, microwaves and so on. Probably need schematic, maintainso far in each of the systems engineering.

b) If you have a scheme for special equipment, you can reduce the time for resolution by half! Unfortunately, many manufacturers do not release their equipment schematic. If you depend too schematic, how to repair these special devices are connected. Because with the scheme is unable to repair equipment faster? Why is a schematic representation of the list shows all, waveform,Voltages, explanation of how that particular equipment work, block diagram, schematic design, the number of components, symbols, diagrams, replacement, modification (if any) and electronic schematic symbols and etc. Assuming you have a power supply section blown and you could not recognize the part number to find, but you can outline the exact code and finally repaired the equipment.

c) If you work in the equipment of the factory or distributorIt has the schematic representation of the model they sell. All units under warranty that is in you will be able to diagnose and repair the equipment fast. This increases the company's reputation and customer to recommend to their friends on the fast service this brand of equipment. You can also obtain the form of a pattern book from local electronic stores. This is usually a compilation of few brands and model of certain electronic devices. TV orTelevision chart patterns are easy to obtain, but computer monitor patterns and amplifier radio circuit is a bit 'harder to find. If you get a book budget. Third, like most of us already know that you can download free electronic schematics diagram from the internet. Free TV scheme is readily available on the Internet. You can also purchase the "CD" format. This investment return control as quickly as possible.

read d) How such a scheme, not in a positionto show you thru article because you do need a real schematic diagram in order to make you understand. Reading schematic is not that difficult, provided you have some basic electronic knowledge. I have a few suggestions:

-Ask from a friend who is in the repair line

-Take short courses on electronic repair and ask the lecturer

-Buy books from your local bookstore about the subject "how to read schematic diagram"

-Buy schematic diagram and learn on your own (this will take sometimes but worth it)

-Fix some project kit using the electronic kit schematics given. This will add to your knowledge also.

Conclusion-In order to become a successful electronic repairer you must understand how to read schematic diagram.

Ferari Style Bubble Style Network and boots

First, we are correcting the spelling Ferari. We do not want to create problems with the car manufacturer with a similar name. We respect your product and do not want to conflict with them.

Ferari Style The boat is a bit 'thinner and easier access to the clip makes it easier to remove the end of the RJ45 network connection, is a narrow place to win on a computer or a network switch to high density. This is a simple start-up cable (printed) to use when connecting to aSwitch or computer. The boot has caused more than conventional plastic around the plug and the cables from getting too close, when many cables are connected to a switch. Therefore, the start Ferari is easier when you connect to a network card on a workstation, server or any network device.

7 Tips for Easy and fast creation of a secure network home!

Do you have a secure network at home with the use of WI-FI?

In other words, access to the wireless network to the Internet without worrying about hackers, viruses and theft of wireless signal cares? With a home network safe requires more effort and education than just buying a wireless router (s), it connects to the Internet and access to surf while praying no one will hack! What many users do not realize when you set aHome networking is that if you buy a router and set a password, the default network is not secure.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

If you use Internet service providers (Verizon, AT & T, etc.) will send a broadband modem to other computers on the Internet, wireless (Wi-Fi) allows, it is likely that you're not sure, unless someone on the Internet and Modem installed security configuration "property."

In the new "social networking" age is important to be aware of Internet threatsthey hide and how to protect your personal information and data thieves from a home network secure. Did you know there are tools and software that exists that allows a person to your wireless home network, trying to steal a connection to him, "crack" the key (password) and what they want from your computer (including credit issues, financial , password, images and other sensitive data, etc.)!

Let's take a look at how you can create asecure network, and I am confident - "safe" surfing the Internet.

1). In your broadband (wireless) modem or wireless router, the default name and password for the router's admin panel (used to modify all settings of the router / modem) access.

Note: The default name is usually "admin" and password is specified in the documentation (or disc) from the manufacturer of the device

2) AlwaysUse encryption (password / key), to truly secure a home network.

WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), are the two most common types, with the EPA to "crack" more difficult than WEP, WPA, then a better choice for safety.

In addition, it is always better to have a completely new and different password (key), at least every 30 days, to safeguard and protect your home network. The password should be to "guess" is difficult - in other words, with a A mixture of symbols, alpha / numeric characters, uppercase and lowercase letters and at least 8-14characters if at all possible.

Note: An example of a strong password is: "1mypasswordx90544z" or how about: these are harder to guess passwords using password-cracking software "Tektime1 p0rt $%%".. (Do not "easy to remember" passwords, such as passwords, which are out of your name, the name of your children (s), date of birth, names of streets, etc.)

3). Turn the > Wireless router or DSL modem, if you do not have access to the network.

For example, if you go to bed or if you are not home it is best to disable the use of the Internet continues to act as a protective barrier for your home network secure. As intruders, trojans, etc. cause damage to your computer or your Internet connection if you do not send a signal? You're right ... can not!

4). Disable Service Set Identifier transfer to your modem /> Router.

Otherwise, as "SSID" is known for the name identifier of the device by the manufacturer. For example, the D-Link router that will "Dlink" as the SSID, while the Netgear router made by "Netgear", as well as the SSID. Turning off the SSID prevents the wireless home network to be in the list of "available networks", if someone seems to combine scanning the environment for wireless networkstoo.

5). Change the SSID.

And disabling the SSID of the router, it is important to change the SSID, even if it does not seem due to the last stage where we have disabled. Changing the SSID will not prevent a secure network at home, but that hackers and spies out immediately what your router. You know what router is used, a hacker or thief is more likely to causeChaos on the home network, especially if you are accessing the same name, password, and information management standards, such as the manufacturer has created.

6). A network firewall safe at home EVER!

Many firewalls, which can come into your router (hardware firewall) built cause various problems when access to the Internet. It 'best for beginners and novices to use a software solution, to learn the ins and outs of hardware firewalls, and itsRestrictions.

Firewalls can be created for the software (eg Trojan horse) to prevent a connection to the Internet without your permission, thus preventing unwanted transfer of data, personal financial information and other confidential information. Firewall prevents access outside your home network without your permission.

Note: A highly reputable software firewall solution, Comodo Internet Security. Feel free to look in your favorite search engine. It iscompletely free (basic version), very effective and simple (after a slight learning curve). I recommend it to all my clients and are not paid by Comodo in order to support them. It 'just a good program, try it!

7). Reduce the scope of the wireless signal.

A secure home network does not transmit a signal to the outside environment of the Internet user at home. Because the range of your wirelessSignal?

Imagine you buy the "biggest and baddest" wireless router that you can be found from a retailer with a range of 1 mile! Wow, this is a long haul ... can be anywhere in the house that does not have a signal loss at all! Although this may be true, the truth is that you only have a signal range of the signal can be transferred into your house, and not necessarily outside.

This prevents thieves connection to the Internet (and hackers)received by the possibility that radio waves from the router or modem, connect the signal would be virtually impossible, even the most experienced hackers!

Tip: One way to signal your area is less, switch to 802.11 g, 802.11 s, 802.11 or b. Consult the documentation for your router from the manufacturer, contain certain information.

Hopefully these tips will help you to create and sustain a secure network at home, and thenis not the nightmare experienced by so many people to protect the wireless network is not the face!

Always remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Until next time,

Calculation happy!
