Netgear Wnr2000 Wireless Router retell

Around a year ago I wrote an record on either upgrading to Wireless N was worth it or not. At the time Wireless N routers were high-priced and most habitancy wouldn't see much advantage in upgrading. Time's have changed though and wireless N routers are at rock lowest prices, and with habitancy doing a lot more streaming of media over their Lan's then upgrading to wireless N can nothing else but be worth it.

The Netgear Wnr2000 is probably one of the cheapest N routers currently available. Its main features are:

• Wireless N speeds of up to 300mbs (100mbps in general conditions).

• 4 x 10/100 wired ports

• One touch join together feature

• Spi firewall

Wireless Performance - In comparison to other similar models the Wnr2000 performs very well and was able to accomplish speeds of just over 100mpbs in the middle of two wireless N clients. Transferring a music album took less than ten seconds. The signal vigor was also impressive and coverage was very good all throughout a medium size house that the tests were performed in.

Remember that to get the maximum operation out of the Wnr2000 your wireless clients will need wireless N cards, although the router is backwards compatible and will work with wireless G, you will not accomplish the same speeds.

One Touch Feature - This is a nice wee expanding that allows you to join together clients at the touch of the button. The main advantage here is that you won't need to remember any passwords. The downside is that this will only work if your clients have Netgear wireless cards that preserve the one touch feature.

Security - Wireless protection comes in discrete flavours, from Wep all the way up to Wpa/2 (Which is recommended). With your wireless network regain you will also be able to take advantage of the Spi firewall. This basically inspects packets as they arrive from the face internet and analyses them for any suspicious activity. This adds a nice layer of defence to your home network and will help against any hack attempts.

Summary - The Wnr2000 is a nice wee router for those looking to upgrade to wireless N without any of the extra features. With that being said though you do get the Spi firewall and one touch highlight with this. In expanding the Wnr2000 is able to accomplish just as fast as many other top end models for a much lower price tag.

2. Clean wireless. 5 Ghz is cleaner frequency band compared with 2.4 Ghz band since wireless router which operates in 5 Ghz frequency band is less noise / interference. So, the best router should reserve the 802.11a technology which operates in 5 Ghz frequency band. The router should reserve the dual-band technology.

3. Further range. So far, the technology adopted for the wireless devices to deliver longer distance range is the Mimo (Multiple-in Multiple-out) technology combined with wireless N. Some manufacturers do not specifically specify the Mimo technology in their products but they adopt the technology into the products.

4. Consistent data throughput. High-intensive bandwidth applications such as gaming and video streaming interrogate consistent data throughput for lag-free and jitter-free performance. Your best gigabit wireless router should reserve the quality of Services (QoS) technology for multimedia traffic prioritizations.

5. Secure. Mostly all new wireless routers today are powered with the newest protection technology including the Wpa/Wpa2; Nat and Spi firewall; Vpn pass-through; and the new feature selection is the quality of providing a protection boundary for guest access. The leisure of Wireless Broadband

Wireless broadband is in fact exactly what its name implies; a high speed internet way premise in case, granted straight through wireless technology. Essentially there are three forms of wireless broadband - broadband transmitted within a local area for the use of the local inhabitants by either a Wisp (Wireless Internet service Provider) or via hot spots at favorite locations such as airports, secondly mobile wireless broadband in case, granted by mobile telephone associates and ready anywhere there is a mobile telephone network capable of carrying internet traffic and lastly, underground wireless networks within homes and businesses used to enlarge original wired networks.

Accessing wireless connection from a local network in case, granted by a Wisp is often reasonably priced and without download speed restrictions. Accessing your own or business in case, granted wireless network is free (after paying the cost of the wireless router or other equipment needed to originate the wireless network) and is only microscopic by the speed of your equipment and restrictions on the broadband network you have associated to. mobile wireless broadband need not break the bank for those who are ready to accept a level of restriction on speed and the amount of facts they can receive. Unlimited mobile wireless way can be a microscopic pricey and in fact not be worth the price hike for the amount of accessibility and speed afforded unless vital for business purposes or due to lack of availability of other wireless or fixed internet access.

The main advantage is, predictably, freedom: the computer or mobile phone receiving the signal need not be cabled. It is worth noting that a amount of mobile phones on the shop can connect to all types of wireless broadband network giving added flexibility and the choice to connect to whichever service is ready at any given location. This means not being tied to using the mobile phone network to get internet access.

The domestic wireless way set up lets you choose where you want to use your laptop. The days of bedtime reading, propped up on the pillows reading a thriller are long gone to be replaced by the trusty laptop, enabling the user to browse and download with the aid of wireless technology.

It is worth noting that the range the wireless signal reaches is affected by the location of the equipment, the type of construction and how mighty a wireless router you have. Ranges can vary from 50-300m depending on these factors. Another advantage of a wireless broadband premise is that some members of the family can use laptops at the same time. No quarrels, no tantrums and unlimited freedom!

With the modern desire to be online at all times and in all places wireless broadband is an significant companion.

Which Are the Best Wireless Routers?

The ask as to which wireless routers are the best is one that is commonly asked, especially by population who are inspecting going out to buy the wireless routers for their enterprise or personal use. It is not all the time a very easy ask to answer, finding that 'best' means separate things to separate people, in separate circumstances.

There is, for instance, the extremely budget-constrained wireless router shopper, who due to lack of funds, finds that they can't look beyond price in their shopping for wireless routers. For a someone is this situation, the best wireless-routers are plainly those that cost the least, period. There is no chance to look beyond price here.

Then we have the feature-oriented shopper, who is finding for wireless-router with the longest list of features (regardless of whether they are features he needs or not). This someone is willing to pay any price asked for a 'feature-laden' wireless router, and for him, money is not nothing else but an issue. For him, the best wireless routers are those that come with most features.

Then, paradoxical as it may seem, there is price-guided shopper, who believes 'expensive is best,' shopping for all as they would shop for a 'prestige good' - so that this someone will go consciously shopping for the most extremely priced wireless-router: regardless of what value it nothing else but offers to explicate the high price tag. For him, the best wireless routers are those that are most extremely priced, period.

Then finally, we have what may be considered arguably the most thrifty shopper: the 'value-guided' shopper: whose idea of a good wireless router is the one that offers the best value proposition. What this someone will do, when going shopping for wireless routers (if he is not a computer networking professional), is to first go into research, try to understand what it is that matter is wireless routers - and then have the router that provides the most of that which matters, at the best inherent price as the best wireless router overall.

There are a number of things that matter in a wireless-router. Compatibility is one such thing: where the best wireless routers are those offer you a great leisure in terms of what types of networks you can use them (through their basic software), what configurations you can use them in and so on. Granted, as you go shopping for network routers, you are likely to have already known what type of environment you are going to use them in. Yet the truth of the matter is that with the rather fast advances in technology we are witnessing, you could find yourself working in a very separate environment just a year or so down the line, and you want network devices that are truly adaptable.

Security is another thing that matters in wireless routers. In this regard, the wireless routers that come with the most security features and that make it easiest for you to set up your own customized security features would be rated as the best.

Prices too matter, when all is said and done. Assuming you have enough money for the project, the best wireless routers wouldn't obviously be the cheapest (cheap often turns costly in the long run), but neither would they be the most costly (as some offer nothing to explicate the extra pricing). Rather the best wireless routers would be the ones that offer the most value for their prices.

Setting Up A Wireless Router

Using a wireless router makes computing life much more enjoyable. Why confine yourself to work on the computer in the same location you took it out of the box? Setting up a wireless router is easy and allows you the leisure to way the Internet, files, printers, plus much more, from virtually any location in your house or yard. Before you shake your head about setting up a wireless router on your own, trust me, if I can do it, whatever can.

Here are some easy steps for setting up your wireless router.

How To Set Up Netgear Wireless Router

Select the correct wireless router for your needs.

If you walk into your nearest Best Buy or other computer store, you will see they have a wide variety of routers available. There are basically (3) wireless networking technologies on the shop today; 802.11a, 802.11b, and 801.22g. So what are the differences in the middle of these wireless technologies?

802.11a wireless protocol is the oldest version of wireless networking technologies currently available. While you may find 802.11a wireless hardware at discounted prices, I would strongly urge you to avoid them. 802.11a is little in range and capacity versus 802.11b and 802.11g. So why set up your first wireless network with the oldest technology.

802.11b wireless protocol (11Mbs) is by far the most tasteless wireless technology in use today. If you select this wireless protocol, you will be fine. But why not start with the newest and many wireless protocol currently available?

802.11g is the best wireless technology on the shop and all new computers with built-in wireless cards use this protocol. 802.11b wireless protocol was superceded by backwards compatible 802.11g (54Mbs). What this means is that if you have an 802.11b card on some of your computing devices, you can use an 802.11g wireless router without the need to replace your wireless card. If you have the option, I would strongly suggest purchasing 802.11g cards for your computers as well to get the maximum benefits of this wireless network technology.

Connecting your wireless router

Before starting, be sure you have a paper copy of all instructions or the router hand-operated in front of you. Sounds simple, I know, but you would be surprised how many people neglect this basic step. Ok, let's get started!

The first step will be to power down your Dsl or cable modem. This will be fulfilled, by unplugging the devices from the electrical outlets.

Next, connect the wireless router to your modem. I would suggest keeping the distance in the middle of the router and modem as close as possible. I have both modem and wireless router setting side by side on my desk.

Included with the wireless router, you should have a short cable. This is your network cable. Plug the network cable into the wireless router in the port labeled Internet, Wan Or Wlan. This designation varies depending on the brand of wireless router you purchased. It does not matter which end of the network cable you connect to the router, since the same type of connector is used on both ends.

Once you have linked the network cable to your wireless router, connect the other end of the cable into your modem. Your modem will only have one port available. You will hear a "click" when a regain association has been established.

You can now re-insert the cable which provides your Internet way back into your Dsl or cable modem.

At this point, you will want to power up your modem. The modem should always be powered up first. Allow a few moments for the Internet association to synchronize with the modem.

It is now time to configure your wireless router. Temporarily disconnect the network cable from the router and modem. Once you have completed this, connect the network cable to any port on the wireless router not labeled as Internet, Wan Or Wlan. You will probably have at least 4 open ports; any one will do. Next, connect the other end of the network cable to your computer. This may seem confusing, however, you need a direct association in the middle of the router and computer to permit configuration.

On your computer, open up an Internet browser and enter the address which corresponds to your specific make of wireless router.

Router Address Username Password

3Com 192.168.1.1 admin admin

D-Link 192.168.0.1 admin

Linksys 192.168.1.1 admin admin

Microsoft Broadband 192.168.2.1 admin admin

Netgear 192.168.0.1 admin password

Once you have entered the address into your browser, you will be prompted to enter a username and password. Reference the chart for your respective information. While in the configuration mode, you will have the choice to turn your password, which I strongly suggest.

Next, you will need to set your network id or Ssid. This name does not have to be lengthy, but pick something that is unique and but easy sufficient for you to remember.

Protecting your network. You will also have the choice to either regain your network or leave it "open". By leaving your network "open", whatever within range of your wireless router signal will be able to way your network. If you live in a location in a amelioration or apartment, there is a good opportunity man will be riding your network..using your Internet way for free and degrading your way quality. It is a good rule of thumb to regain way to networks and computers whenever possible.

To regain your network, select the Wep tab or option. Wep stands for Wireless Encryption. You will be prompted to enter a password or passphrase. We have already addressed changing your administrator password from the default, so let's move on. Be sure to select Apply or Ok after making your selections.

Disconnect the network cable from your computer, and reconnect as before. One end of the network cable goes into the port on the wireless router marked Internet, Wan, or Wlan, and the other end connects to your Dsl or cable modem.

After a few brief moments, an icon should appear on your desktop alerting you a wireless network has been detected. Right click on the icon and select "View ready Wireless Networks".

If you do not see your network, click on the Refresh button from the menu. Once your network is visible, click on it.

If you have Wep protected your wireless network, you will be prompted to enter your password or passphrase. If you have chosen to leave your network unprotected, you will be cautioned that you are attempting to way an unsecured network. select your network and press "Connect".

Wireless Connectivity - How to Set Up A Netgear Router

There are times when the learning curve in this technologically appealing information age can seem like a mountain range. Once you conquer one peak or obstacle and you think you are the smartest fellow on the planet, an additional one task presents itself and you are off to the treatment cabinet for an additional one blood pressure tablet. I opinion it would be a good idea to document the up-to-date caress I had when trying to way the internet on a new laptop in a friend's home using a modem and a wireless router. The think is that I would have liked it if someone had previously documented the same caress for me. It sure would have saved me some time.

The Netgear Rangemax Wireless N Gigabit Router Wnr3500 is a fine bit of gear. I have previously used this hardware to associate an whole household to the internet. Wireless routers are significant for any home network that merge wireless and wired network connections. It was used previously with the operating principles Windows Xp with an iPstar Satellite terminal iCon Series Modem. The setup was easy because all I had to do was install the software and supervene the instructions. It was a piece of cake.

How To Set Up A Wireless Router

how to set up a wireless router

I was working with a newly acquired Acer laptop emachines E727. I was trying to use the router to way the same wireless internet relationship using Windows 7 Home Edition as the operating system. I tried to install software using Cd version 2.0 I received with the router but the error message I received stated that I had a compatibility problem with the version of Windows I was running. I spent quite a bit of significant searching Google for a software upgrade to solve the compatibility problem. I had no luck and so as a last resort I contacted the 'Netgear Support' number.

It is a good idea to confirm that you well have an internet relationship so initially I associated an Ethernet cable from the modem to the Rj45 Ethernet port on the laptop. Once the broadband internet way was confirmed I associated the laptop to the modem straight through the router. The modem is associated to the router via an Ethernet cable from the modem to the yellow way point marked 'Internet' on the router. I have an additional one cable running from ethernet production relationship 1 on the router to the Rj45 Ethernet port on the laptop.

On the bottom right of the laptop there is the internet relationship icon next to the speakers icon. When I moved the mouse over the icon it showed an old internet relationship name. It was therefore significant to log in to the router to convert the settings. This was achieved by typing 192.168.1.1 in the browser window.

The default values for the Netgear Wnr3500 are;

Username: admin

Password: password

Under 'Setup', go to 'Wireless Settings'. Go to 'Wireless Network'.

Go to the 'Name (Ssid)' field and delete the former entry value. Enter a new name in the field for 'Name (Ssid)' using a name that you will recognize. This value could be something as easy as your surname. It can be a value of your choice and must be up to 32 alphanumeric characters. It is foremost to remember that this 'Name(Ssid)' must be assigned to all wireless devices on your network and that this value is case sensitive.

Go to the 'Region' field and settle on your region from the drop-down list.

Go to the 'Channel' field which determines which operating frequency will be used. I entered channel 11.

Go to the 'Mode' field and settle on the desired wireless mode. The default is "Up to 145Mbps", which is the neighbor kindly mode.

Under 'Security Options' I use 'Wpa-Psk [Tkip]'. This is an acronym for Wi-Fi Protected way with Pre-Shared Key. Use Wpa-Psk standard encryption with Tkip encryption type. This is purely a bit of useless information for the useless information department.

At the bottom of the page under 'Security Options (Wpa-Psk + Wpa2-Psk) Passphrase', enter a word or group of printable characters in the passphrase box. The Passphrase must be 8 to 63 characters in length. Use something that you can well remember. If you cannot think of anything, use your mobile phone number.

Click 'Apply' to have your changes take supervene and the router will update. When the router has updated, return to the internet icon at the bottom right of the page and left click. You should have the new 'Name (Ssid)' as the internet connection. If all has gone to plan, you can remove the cable and browse the internet, wireless style. It is the only way to go!

How to Choose the Best Wireless Router For Your Need

Wireless router is the main wireless devices needed, besides the modem, to build a wireless network environment in home or in the SOHO. Generally when you sign-up for a broadband internet connection from the ISP, the ISP provides you a modem which is connected direct to one computer in home either using USB port or NIC adapter. So if you want to build a wireless network, you need to buy a router or access point. How do you know which one is the best wireless router you need?

The term the best wireless router is relative; there are some factors you need to consider in deciding which router is the best for your need. If you have limited budget, you really need to consider the basic requirements which are the best for your need. For example, if you just want to share the broadband internet connection with couple of computers in the household, and other share documents and printer within the household, then you don't need to buy a high features router such as one which is designed specifically for gamers in mind.

Netgear Wireless N Router

There are many types of Wireless Routers at the marketplace you can purchase, but which one is the best? In selecting the wireless router; some people make the mistake of trying to find the best wireless router. Of course, that's a moving target as router get better and better with each new model introduction, but what you really need is The perfect router that is best for your need. So your target is not the best wireless router but the best for your need.

Best Wireless router for Internet sharing

Based on the "The perfect router that is best for your need" If you just want to build a wireless environment in home to share the internet connection, or just for the portability reason so you can browse the internet with your laptop everywhere within the house wirelessly, you just need an all-in-one device which combines the function of modem, router, and the wireless access point.

If you subscribe for ADSL internet from the ISP which includes the monthly charges for the modem, you can purchase all-in-one device which includes the ADSL modem with the price under 0 such as D-Link DSL-2640B, or you can consider Netgear DG834Gv5 - a DSL Wireless Modem with Wireless -G Router and built-in DSL Modem. Both are routers with built-in ADSL modem, including 4-port Switch LAN, wireless access point, and with router/firewall feature for security protection against the internet threats.

Both routers would be suitable for your home wireless environment to share the internet, share the files and printer with several computers in the household. All the requirements you need for building a wireless environment in home with this type of modem-router, a single device for all. This type of all-in-one device would be the perfect wireless router for your need. For Cable Internet, you can consider SBG-900 Cable modem router by Motorola.

Wireless Router for Gaming and HD Streaming

Still hold the principle of the perfect wireless router for your need, wireless router for gaming and HD media streaming demands high performance, fast, and reliable networks. Both Gaming and streaming HD video applications demand high-speed networks that capable of delivering high bandwidth-sensitive applications. They should be capable to intelligently manage and automatically prioritize network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications. You need a wireless router which has QoS (Quality of Service) technology feature.

The fastest wireless network today is based on draft 2.0 802.11n standards. It is not finalized yet, but mostly the manufacturers have shipped their new lines of products using this draft version of 802.11n technology. This draft 802.11n (wireless -N) technology can deliver the speed of up to 300 Mbps (ideal condition, actual speed may vary) with enhanced technology specific to the manufacturers. They should also feature enhanced wireless technology for optimal range and connectivity such as MIMO technology. MIMO is a technology which uses multiple antennas to coherently resolve more information than possible using a single antenna.

The best wireless router for gaming and streaming HD media should be clear from the source of interference. Common source of radio interference is wireless devices which operate in the 2.4 GHz radio band such as cordless phone, baby monitor, microwave oven, home security and monitoring appliances, garage controller, and so on. Wireless 802.11b/g and draft 802.11n standards operate in 2.4 GHz radio band too. For a clear radio band, the wireless router should include the dual-band feature which can operate both in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (802.11a) radio bands either selectable or simultaneous. With dual-band, you can stream HD media as well as for gaming in a clear 5 GHz frequency band, less radio interference as in 2.4 GHz band. This will assure a jitter-free and lag-free wireless environment.

Example of the perfect wireless router for gaming and HD streaming is D-Link DGL-4500. DGL-4500 is specifically designed for gamers in mind. It is powered by award winning GameFuel technology which allows you to customize your network settings to prioritize game traffic so others will not hog all the bandwidth while downloading HD media.

New D Link Dir-827 and Dir-857: The First Wireless Routers With a USB 3.0 Port

Being able to share an external storage attached to the wireless router is an advantage to support your multimedia wireless environment. This is particularly advantageous if your wireless router supports a built-in media server. Wireless routers with a built-in media server allow you to stream multimedia files stored in the attached storage to the Blu-Ray player, XBOX console, and HDTV seamlessly.

Standard home wireless routers do not include a USB port, but mostly home wireless routers which fall into high performance router category are embedded with one or two ports. USB 2.0 port can deliver data rate transfer up to 480Mbps. If you have 5 or ten users or even more on your network either via wired or wireless connections access the files stored in the attached storage intensively time to time, you will experience a slow performance in accessing or transferring the files to and from the storage. This is due to the maximum data rate transfer the USB 2.0 device can deliver is up to 480Mbps. What if the router is embedded by Superspeed (aka USB-3.0) port?

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

Intel specifies the speed of Superspeed port as fast up to 10 times as the speed of traditional USB 2.0 port with the data rate transfer up to 5Gbps. In CES 2011 D Link showcased two wireless routers which are embedded by Superspeed port: the Dir-827 and the Dir-857 wireless dual band routers with data rate transfer up to 2Gbps. It's not as fast the maximum speed transfer as Superspeed port specified by Intel (5Gbps), but it is still as fast 4 times as those traditional routers with USB 2.0 port.

Both Dir-827 and Dir-857 are true simultaneous dual band routers with USB 3.0 port but with different speed. The Dir-827 is engineered by wireless N600 technology with the speed up to 300Mbps similar to the Wndr3800 N600 router, while the Dir-857 is engineered by the wireless N750 technology with the speeds up to 450Mbps similar to the Linksys E4200 N750 router.

How do you compare Dir-827 with Linksys E4200 router? The main differences between Dir-827 and E4200 wireless routers are the speed, the USB port and the guest network. Firstly, the total bandwidth Dir-827 can deliver is up to 600Mbps (300Mbps each band) but Linksys E4200 is up to 750Mbps. Secondly, the Dir-827 includes one Superspeed port but Linksys E4200 includes traditional USB 2.0 port. Not just that, Superspeed port in Dir-827 is powered by Shareport technology to let you easily host an external storage or printer which can be accessed by users on the network. And the last but not the least, Linksys E4200 supports guest network to provide your guests internet access without compromising your private network, but D Link Dir-827 doesn't support guest network.

Except the Superspeed port compliant, the D Link Dir-827 is similar to Netgear WNDR3800 premium edition which the USB port can be used to share the storage or the printer. Is the Superspeed port in both Dir-827 and Dir-857 important for your need? You will judge, but I prefer the wireless router which includes two USB ports for hosting both storage and printer concurrently to support my "work and play" environment.

Wireless Networking, Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

Wireless Networking, Part 1: Capabilities and Hardware

These days it isn't uncommon for a home to have multiple personal computers, and as such, it just makes sense for them to be able to share files, as well as to share one Internet connection. Wired networking is an option, but it is one that may require the installation and management of a great deal of wiring in order to get even a modestly sized home set up. With wireless networking equipment becoming extremely affordable and easy to install, it may be worth considering by those looking to build a home network, as well as by those looking to expand on an existing wired network.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

The first installment in this two-part series of Tech Tips will provide an introduction to the basic capabilities and hardware involved in wireless networking. Once that foundation has been established, we'll take a look at a few setup and security related considerations that should be addressed once the physical installation is complete.

Capabilities

The basic standard that covers wireless networking is the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11, which is close kin to the wired Ethernet standard, 802.3. Many people will recognize 802.11 more readily when accompanied by one of three suffixes (a, b, or g), used to specify the exact protocol of wireless networking.

The 802.11a protocol first hit the scene in 2001, and despite a small surge in recent popularity, it is definitely the least common of the three at this time. The signals are transmitted on a 5 GHz radio frequency, while "b" and "g" travel on 2.4 GHz. The higher frequency means that the signal can travel less distance in free space and has a harder time penetrating walls, thus making the practical application of an 802.11a network a bit limited. The maximum transfer rate, however, is roughly 54 Mbps, so it makes up for its limited range with respectable speed.

As mentioned, 802.11b and 802.11g networks operate on a 2.4 GHz radio band, which gives a much greater range as compared to 802.11a. One downside to being on the 2.4 GHz band is that many devices share it, and interference is bound to be an issue. Cordless phones and Bluetooth devices are two of many items that operate at this frequency. The range of these two protocols is about 300 feet in free air, and the difference between the two comes down to speed. 802.11b came first, released back in 1999, and offers speeds up to 11 Mbps. 802.11g first appeared in 2002 and it is a backwards compatible improvement over 802.11b and offers speeds up to 54 Mbps.

On top of these protocols, some manufacturers have improved upon the 802.11g standard and can provide speeds of up to 108 Mbps. This doesn't involve a separate protocol, but just a bit of tweaking in areas like better data compression, more efficient data packet bursting, and by using two radio channels simultaneously. Typically, stock 802.11g equipment is not capable of these speeds, and those interested need to shop for matched components that specify 108 Mbps support. I say "matched components" as this is not a standard protocol and the various manufacturers may take different approaches to achieving these speeds. In order to ensure the best results when trying to achieve these elevated speeds, components from the same manufacturer should be used together. For instance, only Netgear brand network adaptors rated for 108 Mbps data transfer should be used with something like the Netgear WG624 wireless router (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WGT624NAR).

Considering your typical broadband Internet connection is going to offer data transfer rates of 10 Mbps or less, it can be seen that even 802.11b would be more than adequate if you just want to surf the web. Sharing files on your LAN (Local Area Network) is where the faster protocols will really make a difference, and comparing the prices of 802.11b and 802.11g components may show that there is little to no difference in selecting a "g" capable device over a comparable "b" capable device.

Hardware

Access Point - Wireless Access Point (WAP) is the central device that manages the transmission of wireless signals on a network. A base access point may be capable of handling up to 10 connections, and more robust APs may be able to manage up to 255 connections simultaneously. The D-Link DWL-1000AP+ (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=37) is an example of a wireless access point capable of 802.11b transmissions.

Router - In somewhat technical terms, a router is a network device that forwards data packets. It is generally the connection between at least two networks, such as two LANs, or a LAN and ISP's (Internet Service Provider's) network. For our purposes, and for the sake of simplicity, a wireless router is basically an access point with the added feature of having a port for sharing a broadband Internet connection. The D-Link AirPlus G (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=DI524-R&cat=NET) is an 802.11g capable router that provides access for numerous wireless connections and four hard-wired connections to one WAN (Wide Area Network Internet) connection. A typical router for home use will generally cost less than an access point, and via settings within the firmware, can be used as just an access point anyway. Wired or wireless, all the computers using the router can share files over the network, as well as sharing a broadband internet connection. Communication between wireless computers (or a wireless computer and a wired computer) will max out at 54 Mbps, while communication between wired computers will take full advantage of the 100 Mbps provided via the 802.3 protocol.

Network Adaptor - A network adaptor is required for every computer that you would like to be connected to the wireless network. Many laptops, such as this Sony Centrino 1.5 GHz (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PCGZ1RA-R&cat=NBB) now include a wireless adaptor built in, so no extra hardware is needed. For those with systems that don't have wireless capabilities built in, adding them is fairly simple, and can be done using a variety of connections. Desktop computers can go wireless by adding a PCI slot network adaptor such as the 802.11g capable D-Link DWL-G510 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=308). Notebook users can easily add wireless connectivity by using a PCMCIA adaptor, such as this 802.11g capable device (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=PBW006-N&cat=NET). And for truly convenient plug-n-play connectivity to wireless networks, USB adaptors such as this 802.11g capable dongle (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=80211GWUD&cat=NET) are available.

Antenna/Extender - These items are not essential, but given the specifics of a wireless environment, they may be helpful. Devices such as the Hawking Hi-Gain Antenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HAI6SIP-N&cat=NET) or the Super Cantenna (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=SCB10&cat=NET) serve the purpose of increasing the wireless signal strength, and therefore extend the range of a given wireless network. Not only can a large area of open space be covered, but the signal quality may be improved in structures with walls and floors that obstruct the signal transmission.

Final Words

In this Tech Tip, we took a look at the basics of wireless networking as it relates to capabilities and hardware. In the second part of this two-part series, we will look at some of the basic setup and security considerations that should be addressed. The physical installation of a wireless network may be exponentially easier than a wired network, but the more difficult part is setting up the software and security to make sure everything stays up and running without incident.

How to Choose the Best Wireless Router For iPad

iPad becomes so popular today. With iPad you can browse the internet, read your email, watch and preview the video and download to your video library, catch up on your favorite TV shows and so on. To allow your iPad get in touch with the web, it needs to connect to the Wi-Fi network because iPad is equipped with the Wi-Fi for communication to the Webs. In homes, you need to build a wireless network to share the internet wirelessly. And the heart of the wireless network in homes is the wireless router. Now, how to choose the best one for iPad?

To answer how to choose the best router for iPad, firstly you need to know the Wi-Fi adapter the iPad is embedded with and how well the adapter will work best for the iPad applications. Secondly, you need to choose the wireless router that supports the best performance for the iPad applications.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

iPad is powered with wireless n technology and is compliant with 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless standards. It means that iPad is powered by dual-band technology. Wireless 802.11n technology is the latest and the fastest wireless technology available in the market today. Dual-band technology supports both 2.4 GHz (802.11 b/g/n) and 5 GHz (802.11a) frequency bands. It also equipped with Bluetooth 2.1 plus EDR technology, but nothing to do with your router. With the 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless technology the iPad supports, your router must be able to support the 802.11 a/b/g/n technology. This means your router should support the same technology for optimum data throughput: wireless n dual-band technology.

With wireless n dual-band technology, the router provides high-speed and clean wireless when using the 5 GHz frequency band. iPad works well in streaming the video preview and downloading media when your Wi-Fi environment delivers high-performance network: high-speed, jitter-free video and lag-free gaming. To deliver high-performance network, your router should support the Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization engine technology. With QoS, the router can analyze and separate the traffic into multiple data streams and categorize them by sensitivity to delay. Applications like video streaming, VoIP and gaming are given priority over web browsing.

The best wireless router for iPad should support the wireless n dual-band technology with Quality of Services technology. The following are couple of the best wireless routers for iPad.

Netgear WNDR37AV

NETGEAR WNDR37AV gigabit router is designed for high performance wireless network for streaming video and gaming. Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

Providing the wireless environment for iPad using the wireless router from the same vendor Apple is good for the compatibility. Even though iPad works well with wireless environment using high-performance routers from different vendors, having the devices from the same vendor is better for technical support services.

AirPort Extreme is powered by the wireless n technology with dual-band technology. It can deliver the high-performance wireless environment to support up to 50 clients in sharing the internet connections and it also supports Mac OS X or Windows. The router also supports the QoS for better video streaming. Airport Extreme includes 3 gigabit Ethernet ports, one Gigabit WAN port, and one USB port. With USB port, you can add USB hub to allow you connect USB printer and USB storage for sharing.

You can also consider other high-performance routers for fast response and smooth video streaming such as Linksys E-3000 wireless gigabit router, Belkin Max Play, WNDR3400 N600 router, and new D Link N450 DIR665.

Best wireless router for iPad demands high-performance wireless environment in delivering clean wireless network, high-speed, and Quality of Service. The router should support wireless n technology with dual band supports, and the Quality of Service for multimedia traffic prioritization.

Discovering Wireless Router Reviews

With so many computer-related products it's hard to know what to buy. It's more essential than ever to research the products you are interested in. Making sure you're getting the absolute best value and price. Purchasing a wireless router is a big decision and choosing the wrong router will ruin your wireless network from the beginning. In this type of situation, reading first-hand wireless router reviews would be helpful to distinguish among not just the various manufacturers of but also the various models of wireless routers as well.

Deciding on the Brand

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

When examining wireless router reviews the most essential point to take note of is the manufacturer that's getting discussed. Many brands of routers exist and each operates slightly differently. I am a big fan of "Linksys" wireless routers, but other name brands that offer routers include D-Link, NetGear and Belkin. Though each one has their own characteristics, the basics of the wireless router should be present, including blinking or constant lights that indicated the routers' "power" status and whether it is receiving an internet connection from your internet modem.

Another important issue when choosing the type of router brand is whether it's compatible with your other hardware. To reduce the chance of network errors, a good rule of thumb is to use the same brands of computer hardware for your network setup so that no inconsistencies exist. Most Wi-Fi routers, however, especially Linksys wireless routers, are made to be compatible and work with multiple products and internet platforms. The inter-operability between devices, though, is an issue to pay attention to when reading first-hand router reviews.

Choosing a Design

You'll see that there are many types of models that you'll read about when choosing the router model for your computer network. It's important that the router either support 802.11 "b/g" or "n" technology, and in many cases support all three. Knowing the difference between "b/g" and "n" models is pretty simple: the latest "n" routers should offer slightly faster speeds and better performances than "b/g" models, but should also be backwards-compatible with "b/g" wireless devices. However, reading wireless router reviews ought to help you figure out which of these models you need to purchase for your computing requirements.

Be sure to pay attention to the operating and realized speeds when reading first-hand router reviews of Linksys routers or any other router devices. Only first-hand users can give you an idea of how slow or fast their own internet connection is because of their Wi-Fi router. As such, you will be able to find out from these first-hand evaluations whether you're about to invest in a quality item or 1 that requirements function. In addition, another important factor to consider, some Wi-Fi router brands offer speed-booster-type devices.

How to Set Up a Wireless Router

Many people end up frustrated and confused when trying to set up a wireless router themselves. They usually attempt to follow the setup CD or instructions that came with the router and end up giving up or paying someone else to do it for them.

This article will outline the three basic concepts you need to understand to set up a wireless router yourself. I'm going to show you how to do it without using the setup CD that comes with your router and without any of the fancy gadgets or push buttons designed to make setting up a wireless router easy. While these methods may seem easy on the surface they don't always work. They also keep you isolated from any understanding of what is actually going on. If a simple mistake is made you may get stuck and be forced to turn to someone else for help.

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router

Once you understand how to set up a wireless router you'll also understand how to set up just about any wireless device on the market including printers, game consoles, iPads etc.

The three basic concepts you need to understand about wireless routers and wireless networking security are:

1. Your SSID - Service Set Identifier. This is a big sounding word that simply means the name of your wireless network. It's best to change this from the default and give it a name that means something to you but means little to someone else. Something like ILHMAP for "I Love Home Made Apple Pie" is good.

2. Your Encryption Type - You need to understand the hierarchy of wireless encryption. It all started with WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy. This came standard with most B and G routers. As computer processors speeds increased WEP became easier and easier to crack so a new standard came out call WPA. WPA uses TKIP as it's encryption. Soon after WPA came out WPA2 was introduced. WPA2 uses an even stronger form of encryption called AES. Some older operating systems and game consoles will only work with WEP. When you can you want to use WPA or WPA2. Many times you can choose WPA/WPA2 which allows you to use both types of encryption with the same password. This is a very popular choice when setting up security on a wireless router.

3. Your Pass phrase - This is also known as the password or "encryption key". It's often confused with the router password. The router password is simply the password you use to log into the router. The encryption key is what allows a computer, printer or other network device to connect or "associate" with the wireless router. WEP passwords are generated by typing in a word or phrase. The result is usually scrambled into something like "17B295FcA8". You then have to type these hexidecimal characters into each of your devices. Not very user-friendly. WPA and WPA2 do not generate difficult to remember hex numbers like WEP. You can simply type in 8-63 characters such as "My dog barks 2 loud". In this example spaces count as characters and the "M" in "My" MUST be capitalized.

Now that you understand the basic concepts involved with wireless networking let's put them to use.

All that's really left to do now is access the routers web interface and enter the parameters mentioned above.

In order to access the routers web interface you need to know three things.

1. The routers IP address.
2. The routers user name and password.
3. If you computer is on the same network as the routers IP address.

IP Address

The routers IP address is usually something like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1 or even 10.0.0.1. The documentation that came with the router should provide this. If you don't have the documentation simply do a search engine search for "router make and model default IP."

Username And Password

The routers username and password is usually along the lines of "admin" and "password". If these don't work simply do a search engine search on "router make and model default password". If it's a second-hand router you may need to hard reset it to get it back to it's default. Hard resetting usually involves poking a paper clip into a tiny hole in the back of the router and holding it for 15 to 30 seconds and releasing. Once you release the router will reboot and return to it's factory default settings and you'll be able to use it's default username and password to log on.

Same Network?

If you computer is on the same network as the routers IP address you'll be able to connect. If not you won't be able to connect. Network devices need to be on the same network to communicate with each other unless they're using a special configured router to join their separate networks. Once you know your routers default IP address simply go your computers command prompt and type in IPCONFIG. This will return your computers IP address.

If the first three "octets" of your routers IP and your computers IP line up your on the same network. If they don't you won't be able to connect.

Let's look at some examples of this:

If your routers default IP address is: 192.168.1.1 and your computer IP address is 192.168.0.4 you won't be able to connect.

A better illustration of this is as follows:

Same network:

192.168.1.3

192.168.1.30

Different network:

192.168.1.3

So if your PC is not on the same network as the router what do you do?

Simply connect one end of an ethernet cable to one of the four ports in the back of you router and the other to the network port in your PC and reboot.

When the computer reboots it will automatically pick up an IP from your routers built-in DHCP server that will allow you to connect to the router.

Now that all the stars are all properly aligned it's time to connect to the router.

To do this simply:

1. Enter your routers IP address into your favorite browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox etc.) and hit "enter".

2. Type in the username and password to access the router.

3. Find the "Wireless" or "Wireless Security" section in your router and enter the SSID, Encryption and Pass phrase parameters as discussed above.

That's it!

Once you're done you simply need to enter the pass phrase you created into the wireless utilities in each of your network devices. This is a simple matter of clicking or tapping on your SSID, entering you pass phrase and clicking on "connect!"

Netgear Wireless N Router

netgear wireless n router wnr2000

So where do we start? What is a wireless router and why do I need? It is not a science - a wireless router lets you access the Internet via your broadband Internet connection and your (yours, your partner, your family / roommates, etc.), laptops, PCs, Macs, iPods , PS3, Wii, iPad, or whatever you want to connect.

Productionhappens so fast, simple and reliable is our goal, but I'm sure you will not just someone in a position to pack the connection, perhaps as you spend, nab your credit card, personal data or what ever is more dear to your computer, then we must ensure that up-to-date security is a must. Questions that will not be answered in this article are from a technical point of view as "how can I configure the router?" - There are many articles on this if you reallywant.

So what's the first step? Well good reviews from the coal face are a must as well as some tips on the best products and where to get them. It 'hard to imagine a world without wireless router and network now, but not so long ago, was the stuff of science fiction and technology continues to develop rapidly - does not mean it is easy to correct select.

There are many different types of routers on the market for different needs- We will now focus on the home / small office market. Like many other things in life there are a range of prices depending on demand - "go fast" from all of models of data backup and probably wash your car ... for a price.

To discuss the wave of hype, we're looking to start your stay in the usage data. If you just want to browse in the lounge or on the terrace? We simply want to create or you're willing to wade in? Are you a player or make aCompany? Guidance, such as traffic prioritization, virtual server or virtual private network will support more, but a higher price (but not always!) Have.

A basic criterion is that the characteristics of a router has more than more expensive it will be for sale. At lower levels, if you have older laptops with 802.11b wireless cards can be (probably more than 3 years) you'll probably need probably just a basic router. Ex Tenda Wireless-N150 could be aquickly, with only B or G-switched connectivity.

A little 'technical knowledge - do not worry its painless and you can save a few cents! Older 802.11b and 802.11g devices use to use the bandwidth of 2.4 GHz, while the latest 802.11n standard 2.4 and 5 GHz as possible - the band it is better for throughput-intensive networks, such as games or streaming movies. End of the technical bits.

The basic laptops do not use a flashy new router, but manages to escape with aCould something similar to fill this niche Cisco E1000 - 2.43Ghz single-band N router - is compatible - I'll show you a quick way to set things up in a later article. However, if you have a new laptop then with a single, manages both bands is a better bet (do not worry about the DLink DIR-825 can do for you!).

If you have a Mac, but looks a router etc. iPad Apple may have a good bet.

Security

Then, I will be lookingsecurity and some other features you need and some do not! As we have seen so far is not too hard to get up and running with a wireless router, but the one with the bad guys have an impact on our credit cards and infect your PC? How can we stop them? I really want my next leech all the bandwidth? What happens if my credit card is lost? How can I prevent it from happening before?

Well, surely it can happen - no - I have secured the wireless network to a friendlong after his neighbors said, "it seems that it would be better now own broadband connection ...". A little 'can go a long way - the security must not quarrel, by following these simple tips: -
Make a password for your wireless network - the router's configuration on the device, do not enter a password - make sure you give something only you should know and always follow good password Security Advisory - Gallery "good passwords" for more information. Do not connectThe router to the Internet until you have set your password! If you set access control for your children are sure to buy a router with access control - for example, DLink DIR-825 Access control may limit what some users of sites, and at what time of day they use the Internet ( stop teen wet eyes remain all night on Call of Duty!) Search Access for guests is a great feature for home and small businesses - you can grant access,The Internet (but not files) for the visitors.

All this can be recovered if you follow the basic guidelines for connecting wireless devices, such as regular virus updates and security patches to keep up (for example, for Windows computers with Windows Update) and do not forget to write in one day is not will be followed by post-it notes on your laptop!

So, to catch up with the immortal words - "Do not panic", but do not close your eyes, and you should be fine.

Range

Want to surfin your garden? Get iTunes into the kitchen? Watch Movies in the bathtub? Well, maybe you want to stream movies in the bathroom?

What in the choice of a router which should meet these criteria may appear only in routers because their radio signals work project - this is a major problem when the router with a poor performance in this area (unless you live in a choice -small apartment, of course!). If access to your favorite site on the rise (garden soilSheds, etc.) has scrimped on features because then it could be money down the drain.

Look at the area as an essential feature if you have thick walls and floors just between you and your favorite place to surf - to select the router antennas (antennas for readers in the United States), these sticks are both external (the part sticking out back of the trout) or internal - external, it is usually much better, but look better all the time internally. For example, Sitecom WL-341 does notexternal antenna, while the DLink DIR-655 is the fourth

Since it is not - probably - the display of the router in your fireplace you choose instead of the router with the highest performance in appearance. What is a frame in which you can not get reliable access? If you have a small apartment building with plaster, then an internal antenna may also be sufficient - the key is to make sure that your suppliers right of return if problems develop - sites like Amazon and excel in this JohnLewis.compoints. It is well worth saving too little when we do not give a refund or exchange?

While external antennas mounted on a wall can be used, are expensive compared to the router - be a better choice for wireless home network power (or power line), such as Netgear WGXB102 looking (like many other brands available) - just connect a cable from the router and connect it to the inside wall socket - plug another device in yourdesired field, and - voila - you have wireless access.

Features

Look at all the wireless router to check and see, touted new features, what if you're better and grow your hair - if you just spend the extra 30 € ($ 50)! They themselves say that the characteristic X-or Y-widget is really easy things - but how often is it really so?

As I said earlier, a list of many features - the key is to know whenspend and when to say "gizmo that looks really cool, but I use it once"
Do you really think a digital photo frame built in router? The one sitting behind the couch or behind the printer? Well, as always when a strain on the neck look pictures of little Johnny then maybe ... What is the connection fallback if your DSL or cable fails? It would be a 3G USB slot for your 3G card help? Ask yourself what I really regularly - for example, gamers can alsobenefit from features such as port forwarding, to allow online play without annoying delays, with a file sharing client BitTorrent could be a great feature to schedule downloads and videos so that your laptop be awake all night Could provide access control and VPN capabilities of your employees work safely customer site, allowing the go or even to upload the shots to get home for holidays from Orlando, when the memory card is approaching capabilities, such as Billion BiPAC 7402GX. Most RecentHas the ability to connect as external storage devices to the router might be a good idea, if not to keep all your downloaded music or movies in one central place from replay fro PS3 in the living room, laptop in the garden or just in the bathroom.

At the end of the day is not a function of sliding, if you like and use it - just under control. For more information on Wi-Fi router review of research on Google. The last word - "Do notPanic! "

Unreliable wireless? Powerline adapters too slow? It is one of the Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit?

Devices for home networking has become much more practical and flexible for computer users, as some years ago. For performance and reliability you can not beat CAT5 / 6 network cable, but also for users of home computers, this usually is not an option especially if you live in rentals. Typically, access is the main form of network connectivity at home and in recent years, Powerline Adapters (Wall-inserted-in power adapter, AC power outlets, in turn, EthernetCompounds have been used) and are becoming increasingly popular especially in areas of shade houses. It is a new and unknown network connection device designed home MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit.

MoCA is an acronym for Multimedia over Coax Alliance, are responsible for developing specifications for coaxial cable networks.

Netgear Wireless N Router

The coaxial cable is in most homes and is a standard cable to connect to TVs, radios usedand cable TV.

Speed should be up to 270 Mbps, but the most Ethernet RJ45 LAN over coaxial cable 100 Mbps Ethernet Adapter

Multiple adapters may be on the same coaxial cable infrastructure and communication in a network topology connected to shared media (cable). Moca 1.0 chipsets have a limit of 8 devices. The latest devices use Moca 1.1, which have a limit of 16 devices. MoCA 1.0 and 1.1 certified products will work together.

MoCA Coax Ethernet AdapterThe kits are usually sold in pairs and to generate the function units such as an Ethernet bridge. The technology converts Ethernet to a regular traffic signal that is able to pass through the coax wiring infrastructure, you share the cable with cable TV, radio, or regular TV signals. Each adapter has an RJ45 LAN port (these are also found on the back of, laptops and game consoles except the Wii) and two coaxial (F-type) connector. The second is for the coaxial connection through anyalready using the coaxial cable, and cable TV box, and then continues to operate as usual.

The following example is a coaxial Ethernet Adapter Kit can be used: a game console is to get your shiny HDTV, but the game is lag online and offline playback of HD video files from PC to HDTV is choppy on console. Do not have a network connection behind your HDTV, it seems, you have to live with Wi-Fi or Powerline adapters. But by inserting a pair of coaxial Ethernet adapter, much better connection could be achieved. The first adapter would be connected to run coax to the cable modem would be connected via Ethernet CAT5 cable to the router is in your office and the RJ45 connector. The second adapter is behind your HDTV in line with the coaxial cable running to your cable TV box and the RJ45 port for the adapter placed here connected via CAT5 Ethernet cable to the back of the console game. Voila, you have a connection faster and more reliableWi-Fi or Powerline.

Price and Availability

These are the weak points for MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit. Availability is ok in the U.S. and two of the largest manufacturer of networking kit production computer equipment (a couple).

D-Link DXN-221 MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit (Mocha 1.1)

and

Netgear MCAB1001 - MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit (Mocha 1.1)

Both are about $ 185. But MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter for less, Motorola has beenNIM100 (Moca 1.0) have been one of the first adapter on the market and can be used for less than $ 120 for a pair on eBay (Motorola does not sell directly to consumers) need.

MoCA Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit are still made in the UK market and eBay is also dry. Thus, users of computers in the United Kingdom have to wait and see how this product is a bit 'more than niche products Powerline adapters, for example.
